Guitar

Your easy curves
fitted well into my arms
Your body accross my knee
My hand round your smooth neck

I felt in control,comfortable
But the first touches
were sharp on my soft schoolboy fingers.
I changed from steel to nylon
Gentler,less harsh.

With time,neglecting
essential schoolwork
I managed the shapes
of chords,acquired a
gradual sense of rhythm,

less of harmony,and
the words almost
unnecessary,if intelligible
I learnt sequences of sounds,

Not individual notes,my small
but determined fingers
gripping your frets.
My strong arms hugging
your body greedily,

Gradually the clutching and pawing,
the desperate clinging
became a less frantic if
still uneasy bond between us.

After first embarrassing
outings in your company
I was less afraid to display my
affection and treatment of you,
even took pride in taking you
on journeys,standing you
in corners of silent rooms

But the years have been
my usual show of initial kindness,
provisional enthusiasm,temporary
dedication and peremptory disdain.

Leaving you undusted
in a variety of houses
and attics,parcelled up
and nowhere to go.

My usual foregone rejection
of any commitment
to such a fine body.
Is this a proper way to treat a lady?
