I'll sleep with you

I’ll sleep with you

When do you sleep in a strange bed
at three in the morning as
a European heat wave slams
continuously through the window
and in the small hotel bathroom
barely cold water fills the sink
then flows anti clockwise down the plughole
for everything is upside down and
the emptiness in the room
can only be filled by trying to remember
a laugh heard down the thin cold wire
of a telephone that even in
thirty seven degrees of heat doesn’t warm you
in the way or the place as light still comes
from the east and you struggle that
tomorrow in a strange bed at three in the morning
is closer to sleeping than it was yesterday.
Seven floors up

Seven floors up.

A swathe of blues, peaceful sounding
disturbed only by small crests of whites
as you
Venus
goddess of love
rise from your ocean bed
foam of the seas is your soap
bubbling over your sea light form
arousing to a point of heat
that the next breaking wave cannot cool
and the water rushes in over and over again
as you
Venus
goddess of love
smile and sleep
Love Triptych

Love Triptych.

I
It’s like you’re walking down a tunnel step by step
towards the light at the end which turns out to be
the reflected tears falling down your face
and as you turn the path ahead
is the path behind and the footprints you were following
were the footprints you made
the last time you walked this way.

II
On a beech covered hill
manuka scent from warm nor west breeze
feathering through silvery fern
A picnic table, a basket, a bottle of wine,
two glasses still fill sparkling like snow fed streams
in sunlight golden lit in a ring of daisies
as the drinkers twined and twinned
in movement and sweet embrace.

III

An eye is blinked from a sleepless dream
A kettle whistle blows reverie by china mugs
in painted glaze of scenes we’ve watched before
and the water pours soothing balms
soaked on skin I know and visit again for more than welcome.
