Recipe for a Valentine's Day pancake

Recipe for a Valentine’s Day pancake.

Take a three quarters cup,
that’s like love in its measure
of optimism, a gauge
above full or empty.

Sift that amount of flour,
plain as in the ordinary,
slipping through the mesh of days,
to heap in a bowl,

such as a pudding basin;
cradle its crazed body,
as mother showed you.
Lick the memory spoon clean.

Make a well in the flour
for an egg, and a lover’s
half of a ½ pint of milk.
Add your rest
.
Beat thoroughly. Ignore wisdom;
batter need not stand. It’s ready
when you are done, but like love,
the thought of it precedes you.

To make a perfect pancakes,
take a lightly greased skillet,
so when you pour yourself in,
love has no ragged edges.

Wait for
a confident flick of the wrist,
that shows off her ring finger,
that sets you in orbit.
