Advice to the Young
Before the start of love
I'll tell you of the art of love,
And help you find the very heart of love.
But there are years between us, that's the problem.
I've been around, lived well, made some mistakes
From which I'd like to help you benefit,
But fear you won't avoid your own heartaches.
Still, here's my freely-offered helping hand,
Through the advice I give you for the best,
On how to cope when love decides to call
You to it's world of selfish interest.
Swerve to avoid this thing that songs call lerve,
It's only saccharine, not sugar sweet,
A superficial coating that can hide
Reality that's only thin-skin deep.
Don't only listen to your friend's exploits.
To boast of love is easy, if moronic,
And true affection's not for gossiping.
Believe that it's not weak to be platonic.
You'll feel the urge to fall head-over-heels
And into bed, thinking you've got to make love;
A mattress doesn't make a firm foundation,
For many it is just a place to fake love.
I guess you're going to ask me just what love is,
More than a cartoon in the daily press.
Browse through the magazines and you'll think love
Is force, divorce, raw sex, a tabloid mess.
I tell you that real love is magical,
The more you share your love, the more you show
Instead of having only half of love
it will increase, for sharing makes love grow.
So when love catches you, that's when you know
The person you are with is special, so
To stay together you'll fight, blow for blow
For it...
Then go for it!
