Lost Love

I have a picture of you in my head
Like a faded postcard
Of somewhere I used to know.

You turn to smile one last time
As you're leaving.
Then you disappear.

I feel sure you'll come back
This time
But the image is too clear,
And the I love you
That begins to hurt my head
Comes back to me
In muffled
Distant tones.

And I do believe you,
Oh I do believe you,
But will it end up like before,
Just another contradiction,
That leaves me stranded
And afraid.

And I lap up the words
But even as they
Touch my tongue,
I wait in the shadows
For the bitter sting
To begin.
And Always They Were Together

For sixty-five years they lived
Side by side, cheek to cheek,
Heart to heart, as time tick-tocked past.
Life came and went, came and went,
Brought highs, brought lows,
Brought sun-filled skies and tears,
Tears that made the rivers flow.
And always they were together.

No need for questions after a while,
They grew, they knew.
Fresh-faced bride and groom
Became laughter-lined smiles
And eyes that told a thousand miles
Of love and pain and love again.
And always they were together.

For an eternity they moved as one,
Two halves of one heart
That beat the tides of time.
So many times they touched -
A caress, a soft embrace,
A hot-lipped, cheek-blushed kiss -
Invisible threads wove tighter
Binds between their souls.
And always they were together.

Through winter's frost and summer sun,
Their love remained, went on and on.
One constant heart amidst the throng,
One constant beat to their love song.
And always they were together.

As one they stayed for but a day when,
On Thursday, softly sleeping still,
He took his leave and passed away.
Alone she wept, a missing limb,
As dawn looked on and on and then -
She dressed.
Made up her face.
Made preparations.
Reserved her space.

Once more at home she sat. Serene.
Memories thick within the rooms,
She watched and watched the gathering gloom.
Until, as day gave way to night,
She laid down upon their marriage bed.
With an aged beauty she stilled her breast,
No more parted, one heart at rest.
And always they were together.
