Born in Paris in 1971 of French and Sri Lankan origin, Sharmina Karim’s abstract paintings are influenced by both cultures. Texture is a guiding principle of her work. Allowing the images to evolve instinctively, Karim balances both textured and smooth surfaces along side matt and high gloss finishes. In doing so Sharmina Karim hopes to achieve a sense of flow, movement and transformation which parallels her own experiences and ethos of life. “In most of my work, I mix flowing and shifting shapes complemented by a geometrical precision which probably reflect my desire to attain perfection”. She says.
