Drama is created in the moments where life feels distorted. When something throws a person off their stride, a dramatic effect is made. The expressionistic art from Thomas Mestanek, one of the Czech Republic’s finest figurative painters, shows the thriving energy of contemporary humans existing within the modern metropolis. This is a place of boundless dynamism and unanswerable questions, a place in which people combine into a mass without ever interacting. His art shows scenes of real and imagined life; accidents, studios and fictional characters all merge within the metropolis. Every angle is stylised in order to show the unnerving and exhilarating buzz of the streets and rooms of the city. Mestanek aims to create art that is beyond the decorative and offer statements of what the human experience is in our vast cityscapes. Roles and situations are unfixed in this collection, asking the viewer to take many looks in order to grasp the extent of the image.
