"The completion of a successful portrait for me is the moment the client feels recognition with it, and ultimately wants to take it home and make it theirs." Toni Cogdell.
Toni Cogdell's portrait paintings beautifully capture those intangible moments of human reflection. The experience of being abandoned in our own thoughts and emotions, however fleeting, is one that we are all familiar with. Cogdell's paintings powerfully reflect how that moment of absorption manifests itself in our physical and bodily appearance and in doing so allows the viewer an ephemeral glimpse into the human soul....

The result is hyperrealist in minute detail.

Matt Franks has always felt portraiture to be an intriguing aspect of art. "Trying to capture a sense of someone's personality on paper is challenging and it is equally hard to draw someone's likeness, when even the slightest fault will mean that the picture may not be a true likeness", he says.

In my portraiture I am concerned to capture something of the character of my sitters, as well as their likenesses, and I like to be clear from an early stage that the sitter is happy with the general composition and plans for the finished piece.
I draw in pencil and charcoal, and paint in oil on canvas, as well as on small panels. Most of my pictures are made from life, though I also work from photographs, or a combination of both. My studio is in South Wales, though I can travel if necessary.

During my chaotic, early teens there were occasional moments of focused calm during which the tendency to draw a face or a likeness germinated, grew, and hopefully is growing still.
Portraiture 'drew' me (yes, I learnt a lot from self-portrayal) and this inclination has never diminished. I derive immense satisfaction from realising a true likeness of someone in a painting; something photography [inevitable artists aid though it often be]can't always guarantee.
I like to spend some time with the sitter, occasionally photographing him or her in various light conditions and from different angles throughout the session. I strive to capture typical stances, looks, and expressions and I often make appropriate suggestions to highlight particular characteristics. This crucial process cannot be hurried: it should be relaxed and pleasurable.

My heart lies with painting human faces and human bodies. I think the human face is intriguing and I think that he painting is more charming than the photograph. The face lives and it is never the same. The past, the present, the character, the feelings, the colours and odour, it is that what can be seen from one’s face.
When I start a new portrait, a new painting I am very excited about it. Lots of interesting questions about the person/ the photograph that I have in front of me . How will I find the person’s true ego? Which colour on the pallet should I use to express one’s inner personality?
