"Water is an inspiration, and an integral part of, the painting process for me. I am drawn to the shorelines, to indefinable places where water and land collide. `it is about being immersed in that place, that moment, the tide, the ebb and flow of the water and my physical interaction with it. The underlying strength of these forces lies in their constant state of flux, and my focus lies in these moments."
British Artist Jo Lewis (b 1967) lives in London and works primarily with paper and watercolour using the ebb and flow of the River Thames. Her artistic practice has evolved out of a life-long love of being outside, and many of her paintings are made entirely in and by the waters of the Thames.
Rather then making representations of what she sees, Jo allows the water and ink to reveal a succession of visual traces.
Allowing the movement of warted to carry the inks across the page, she creates translucent veils of colour, working with the invisible forces of nature at the heart of the city.
The pebble paintings are made from pebbles Jo finds on the beaches of the Thames at low tide.
