Kate Bailey, born in Belfast, moved to England in the late 1960's. Finds herself mostly concerned with light, the raw material of photographic imagery. "I find it difficult to limit myself to one or two genres, theres so much to be explored, in every walk of life."
Up close and personal is where you'll find her, usually about 3cms from her subject. "It started with flowers, which was what I photographed when my daughter took her afternoon nap. As she has grown up, I have been able to move further from home, broadening my horizons, photographically speaking."
Last year saw the start of something completely different. After photographing the local Retained Firefighters for a book to celebrate their service to the community, Kate joined the Fire Service. You see what trouble photography can get you in to!
Kate still teaches photography 2 days a week at a college of further education. This is her 10th year of teaching, and she was awarded Advanced Practitioner status in 2003.
In between the firefighting, the teaching and being a mum, Kate has set up as a sole practitioner. To date her clients have included, Hawkshead Clothing, Bernaville Nurseries, Heart of Devon Tourism, a selection of her work is held in Flowerphotos slide library and, more recently, Stock Photography UK a library based in Devon.
Work experience with Paul Hill proved a turning point in her career. On completing a degree in Photography at West Surrey College of Art & Design (now The Surrey Institute), Kate moved to Devon.
