Elvira Pyrkova

ELVIRA PYRKOVA was born on May 2nd 1970 in Arsamas, Nizhni Novgorod, Russia. She was admitted at the Central Art School of the National TRETYAKOV Gallery in Moscow, part of the VASILY IVANOVICH SURIKOV ART INSTITUTE, by its selection committee in 1980 and graduated in 1988. At TRETYAKOV she studied under Alexander Smirnof, Natalya Bereznaya and Serguei Andreyaca, whose name bears the NATIONAL ACQUARELLE GALLERY. In 1988 she entered the All-Russia State Institute of Cinematography where she studied Costume Design under veteran Soviet costume designer Olga Kruchinina. She graduated with honors in 1994 from the MFA program. In 1995, after some experience in film costume design, assisting Costume designer Irina Ginno in a film by Eldar Ryazanov, she moved to Mexico where she has held successful exhibits in mayor metropoli like Guanajuato, Monterrey and Mexico City. Hers was the only foreign entry in the book HUELLA ENTRE MILENIOS, which features work from the most important modern Mexican painters and sculptors, like Martha Chapa and Jose Luis Cuevas. Her work can be seen in several galleries in Mexico City and Monterrey: Galeria Lourdes Chumacero and Galeria Sylvia Ozerkovsky, as well as in Kew Gallery in New York City. Elvira Pyrkova now lives and works in the United Kingdom, her work has been twice short -listed for Royal Birmingham Society of Artists’ Prize and can be admired at Driffold Gallery, Royal Sutton Coldfield and RBSA Gallery. Her most recent commission was by the Erdington Abbey, Parish of Thomas and Edmund of Canterbury, to deliver studies in oil of Saints David, Patrick, Andrew and George. More recently, her portrait of Russian tragedian Smoktunovsky was exhibited and sold at Christie’s, St. James, London, being short-listed for the Garrick/Milne Prize.
