Julia Sutton
Julia Sutton is an East Anglian artist, who has spent much of her life working in continental Europe. After a musical training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a harpsichordist, she established herself as a harpsichord decorator, working in Belgium, Holland and Germany, before commencing her own painting in 1982. After studies at St Martin's School of Art, she went to Paris where her work was discovered and presented by the critic Jaques Bouzerand, in the forum 'L'art de Ia Critique'. The craftsmanship of the artist/decorator and the awareness of international art trends gained over a decade in Paris, inform her art, which is rooted in a childhood spent in the fishing port of Lowestoft, Suffolk. This exhibition contains some of Julia's most-recent work; paintings, prints and mixed media assemblage, completed in her studio overlooking Lowestoft Harbour. Images deconstruct within images, hang precariously from the landscape, like cranes over a harbour, reconstructing in the powerful relationship between all the elements within each canvas, It is an audacious journey, where conflicting and complimentary media are fused together through rich associations - the harbour and sea as music and vice versa, visually given life, purveying whirlwinds and pools of emotion and spirit. Julia Sutton's harbour transgresses its own reality and is remade and reworked in the helter skelter of thought and action, fascinated and uplifted by surfaces (celebrating light on water), but journeying deeper to where discord breaks through. It is this discord of method, materials, colour, scale and translucence which gives these paintings their vigour and harmony. A chance to see the East Anglian coastline through new eyes.
