After four years' intensive figure drawing in a variety of media, I began painting in oils in 2004. My paintings usually focus on people: portraits, figures in their environment, their implied relationship, the tension/attraction between them. I work from life, and other sources: drawings, my own and others' photographs, the work of other artists, and images from magazines, newspapers and other media. Components selected intuitively suggest the structure and ambience of a painting. The process that follows involves withholding interpretation, and allowing the painting to unfold. Chance and intuition are central to this, providing a way into areas of concern which may be outside conscious awareness.
I trained initially at Harrow School of Art in ceramics; later I qualified as a psychotherapist. I hope that my work affects the viewer directly, by-passing the need for an immediate interpretation. The"meaning" of my paintings changes
for me as time passes. I assume that there are as many meanings as there are viewers and I'm content if they are left stirred and with a freshened eye.
