The paintings share some aspects of that area of modernist practice which focuses on system and procedural method. However, Gillian Leigh applies several different formal processes in sequence. Each layer disrupts the one below, allowing incidental and unpredictable reactions to occur. Although the paintings may allude to other structures in the world, the final experience is often within the changing surface of the paint as the observer moves around them.
