The grid paintings go beyond figurative reference and into fabricated atmospheres. They are variations on structure, which are immediate visual references to urban existence.
Michael takes decorative banality that surrounds our existence and transforms them into an urban impression. The paintings highlight our layeered structured culture from textiles to techno-music. Standardising the ordering properties of society.
The lines in the paintings are repeated to create a lattice effect. There are no fixed points of view. Each layer of lines is separate but at the same time dependent on the other layers, which creates a harmonious surface. The urban theme is represented by the congested space between the coloured lines.
