Since graduating with a BA Hons in Fine Art from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 1996, I have been painting in oils because I enjoy the richness of colour and surface I can create with them. I use brushes, scrapers and anything else I can make marks with, to create a depth as well as surface tension by building up layers of paint.
My work celebrates life, love and energy, and takes both figurative and abstract form. It is about the invisible threads of memory and emotion attached to objects, events, music or words, that connect us to other people on many different levels and in different ways. I think of it as visual poetry.
An idea may develop from an abstract form such as 'rhythms,' or from an object such as a patterned paper bag. The exhuberance and colour are the main reasons why my work is selected for regular exhibitions in a number of hospitals by an Art Consultancy. I also enjoy the fact that there are new things to discover in my paintings each time you look at them. They need to be seen to be fully enjoyed!
I also make brightly decorated ceramics, one of which was selected for display at the V&A Museum in 2003.
My paintings and ceramics celebrate colour, form, pattern and texture. Thoughts, feelings, figures and objects are synthesized into a unified visual statement reflecting my inner world. There are many influences in my work. My main influence is Paula Modersohn-Becker followed by Chagall, Klimt, Matisse, Mary Fedden, and narratives of Frida Kahlo and Shani Rhys-James, and the ceramics of Philip Eglin.
I exhibit twice a year with The Farnham Art Society , annually at The Battersea Art Fair, London and Surrey Artists Open Studios
