Gokhan Burhan

Gokhan Burhan, an Istanbul-born artist, based in London, makes pictures of people laughing, having fun, joy. The human faces are constrained within a two dimensional surface; the images do not fit in the frame; an exaggerated contrast of light and shadow is used to create depth and abstract geometric elements and forms. The works reflect themselves with an illusionist effect. Some look like a psychological (ink blot) test. Every viewer of this work may have a different opinion about the content of the picture. The faces that appear can be/are famous, infamous, friends or strangers; referenced from photographic images found in newspapers, magazines or from the artists own photographs. The stylistic treatment and the vibrant colours that have been used are inspired by everyday surroundings: fabric, wallpaper, printed materials, junk, textile motifs. He has participated in a number of joint exhibitions in Istanbul showing lino cut prints, paintings and illustrations.Solo Exhibition: Time Gallery/Greenwich London 12 November-10 December, 2001. Solo Exhibition. Live Gallery, London June-September, 2003
