Edwina  Hannam

I was trained as an Illustrator, obtaining my MA in Illustration from Central St Martins in 2005. Over recent years, I have become a freelance artist, realising the definitions between these two skills comes down to semantics alone. Being trained in Illustration has taught me to observe detail, to recognise the aesthetics of space and how this translates to the paper or canvas. When your work is intended to illustrate words, it is essential to have that awareness - how it compliments the text, completes the narrative, both in terms of content and aesthetic. I paint in a very detailed, realistic style but always try to add a talking point, an element of disquiet. I have illustrated many books and book covers for publishers as diverse as Penguin Books, BBC publications, the Women's Press, Thames & Hudson, Hodder & Stoughton etc..
I like to create a narrative within my painting, draw the viewer in, even if it seems on the surface to focus on obvious detail. I am undertaking more portrait commissions of late and have had pieces in the Sunday Times watercolour exhibition at the Mall galleries.
