My work explores our perception of landscape. In the twenty-first century our comprehension of reality in the visual world is derived as much from photographic and moving images as from actual experience of an environment. We take in a landscape that we pass through as if watching a movie - zooming in on certain key areas.

In many of my paintings I have used transferred photographic imagery, enlarged and enhanced in places, to communicate my experience of the Alpine and Pyreneen landscape. The mountains are not empty and un-trodden, they bear the trace of human presence and man's intervention in the natural order. The juxtaposition of the fragmented, mechanically produced imagery and the painted marks is symbolic of this precarious balance. In my urban landscapes, I am fascinated by the way in which nature reclaims derelict buildings and areas of waste land.
In 2012 I made a journey on horseback through the High Andes in Peru, I passed through landscape and villages that few visitors ever see. The Peru paintings are a response to the clarity of light and intense colour in the landscape, buildings and local costumes.
