POLAR EXPEDITIONS. I'm better known for leading expeditions in the Antarctic:
1970-71 Ornithologist & boat driver on Elephant Island (4 months,15-men).
1976-77 Leader & birdman in Elephant Island group (3 months, 16 men)
1983-85 Leader on Brabant Island for 12 months in tents & snowholes.
Then the Arctic for BSES Expeditions in Svalbard 1987,1993,1996 & 2001
In 1999-2000 I led a fantastic team taking BSES back to Antarctica -
the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, West Falkland & Cordillera Darwin.

ENGINEER. A Dagger Marine Engineer Officer & Commander OBE RN, I served in a dozen ships, & ashore teaching post-graduates, overseeing in shipyards & 9 years R&D.

BOATMAN. I have mucked about in boats most of my life, and in both polar regions.
1970-71. Cox’n of our 1 Gemini dinghy off Elephant Island, no external support.
1976-77. First Antarctic expedition using canoes for travel(and no safety boat).
1986,1993,1996 & 2001. Boat driver in Svalbard (c70 days boating, c4,500 km).
LAST YEAR I WORKED AS EXPEDITION STAFF ON POLAR TOUR SHIPS .
Dec.2006: M/V Sarpik Ittuk (2 Antarctic voyages as Artist in Residence).
Dec.2006-Mar.2007; M/V Polar Star(5 Antarctic voyages, lecturer & boatdriver)
July 2007: M/V Polar Pioneer (1 voyage to Svalbard, natural history lecturer)
This boreal winter I'm drawing & painting birds again....and then.... who knows?
