I paint and draw in an attempt to interpret a view, a feeling or a memory of an event. Much of the recent paintings are inspired by travel and the exhilaration of experiencing dramatic and unfamiliar landscape.
When painting on location, the act of intense, silent observation provides greater opportunity to absorb the experience of time and place.
These paintings are visual notes about colour, line and texture, recorded in watercolour using quick and light brushstrokes, pen scratches, tissue wipes and toothbrush splatters.
This visual record may provide information for further paintings; some naturalistic, using photographs for reference, while others are more about the feeling of a place and rely mainly on instinct for choice of colour and marks, focusing on balance, rhythm and harmony.
