Richard Rees RIBA, FSAI
Artist’s Biography, March 2017
Richard is self-taught as an artist but has been painting and drawing in a variety of media for nearly 50 years. As an architect has been drawing and illustrating his own work since his University days. In 1984 he also became a professional illustrator and Fellow of the Society of Architectural Illustration (SAI). He is now Chairman of the SAI and Secretary of the Society of Artists in Architecture (SocAA).
Since retiring from full time architecture in 2012, he has concentrated on a new style of work in Oil Pastels on coloured paper grounds. The theme of these is 'Patterns of Settlement' and reflects his interest in city form. This was also the title of his first one man show at Abbott and Holder in Bloomsbury in 2015 which was very successful. Two thirds of the 24 works on show were sold and Richard also received a number of commissions, which he now undertakes regularly. The prints on sale here are from originals in the show and subsequent works undertaken as commissions. The limited edition prints are produced on high quality artists' watercolour paper and the effect is an amazingly accurate rendition of the original works.
He says of this current work; ‘Different societies and traditions develop unique patterns of settlement and I have been interested in these since I started designing masterplans at the beginning of my career. I find the medium of oil pastel is a very expressive one for bringing out the vibrancy of a place and the way that buildings stack, merge and form into townscapes. The sharp, at times semi-abstract, technique helps to demonstrate the way we read a townscape and how attractive and interesting these arrangements are to us’
His Oil pastels have been included in a large number of Group shows in London, Edinburgh and Paris over the last few years, with particular success in the Pastel Society and New English Art Club.
