| There is a very distinct split in the works on show here. On the one hand there is a collection of voyeuristic, playful nudes which display a cheeky playfulness and on the other hand there are a couple of paintings entitled "Zoology 1" and "Zoology 2" in which the figure is taken to an altogether different Leger-like stage whereby it is only just recognisable as human. These are cartoon-like and graphic in contrast to the representational nudes, which are lit by a warm, yellowy light. One peculiarity of this artist's idiosyncratic approach is that the artist's hand with paintbrush is seen trompe l'oeil fashion, still in the act of painting the picture itself. The artist plays a game with the viewer who is denied the sense of being there with the nudes by the artists' protective hand, flattening them out from real bodies into things, creations of the artist's mind. |
