| Stephen Cunliffe aims to present us with an idea of painting. Influence by Deleuze and Guattaris, his essentially geometric compositions are initially created on the computer. “I draw using the PC, save and print ‘pleasing’ images from which I make a painting.” he says. “I do not consider the geometric work abstract, (although I may be abstracting an idea of painting). Opaque colour and lines reiterate the logic of pictorial space but without chiaroscuro modeling. Simplification presents colour and gesture as ideographic, not a metaphor or an equivalent for ‘emotions’ but as factual“. Stephen Cunliffe completed an MA in Fine Art painting in 2003.
