Vikki Hughes

Behind all beauty there is a pattern. Each enigmatic subject belongs to a wonderful coded sequence. The relationship between art, maths and science has been discussed at great lengths over the years and Vikki Hughes is the latest artist to be fascinated by their crossover. Having studied science she now uses acrylics to create stunning works of texture and colour that demand closer inspection. Resembling computer sequences or magnified sections from graphs, these works are simultaneously contemporary and stylish. Hughes blends reds, greys and blacks to make images that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are loftily inspired.

Pascale Hulin

Fascinated by symbolisium, Pascale Hulin refers to his work as, 'high relief symbolic explorations'. Using a variety of mediums, Hulin begins the first stage of his work by building and collaging, 'found elements', together. Collected over a period of time and on numerous walks through the countryside these elements establish a backdrop to the next stage of his creative process. "Then a new period begins with the giving up of the object for the subject: the maze." Hulin says, explaining "A way opens to symbolic exploration in my artwork. My painting is then fuelled with myths, and gives life to an artistic expression which reveals a deeper quest."

Gerry Hunt

In recent years I have started each painting with purely formal, open-ended, classical Abstract Expressionist intentions, until some sort of figurative scenario presents itself to me. Whereupon, with as little sacrifice as possible of the pure painting so far achieved, I encourage a believable real scene to emerge. When I drew with charcoal on paper, which is how I first became aware of this possibility in my work, it usually resulted in figures and/or animals, caught in some rather strange and sometimes funny 'in between' situations. Recently, with slowly increasing success, I have begun to achieve this in my paintings. In order to approach the technical simplicity of using just a stick of charcoal, as I do when I draw on paper, while using oil paint on canvas, I have restricted my palette to the three primary colours and white.

Taken from exhibition information "stills from dreams" at the cafe gallery 2003.

Oliver Huntrods

Where as his instinctive earthy colour pallet lends itself to a more organic form of representation, which teeters on abstraction.

Wendy Hyde

The space between music and art has always been a fascinating one and for Wendy Hyde it has proved to be an inspiration. Her work dedicated to the music of J.S Bach contains rhythms and pulses as well as the same harmonious flow of ideas and feelings. The purples bulge and ripple organically into the deep crimsons, creating a feeling of movement and balance. In other works flashes of white provide a lightning bolt of light which serves to illuminate the whole piece. Colours are suddenly given edges and the mindís eye works to turn these into forms. Like all great art, the viewer could see something new each time they looked at this. When the palette changes and she uses dark blues and yellows, the work evokes the power and mystery of the coming tide. Deeply influenced by the abstract expressionists of the past, Hyde uses these influences to create works that show her personal response to the natural world. Powerful and brooding, these paintings would grace any space and provide years of interest.
