catherine Hubert

Catherina Hubert paints with a bold, joyful palette reflecting the contrasting landscapes and cultures of Spain, Scotland, Brittany and the south of France where she has lived. "Painting is at the center of my life," she writes. "I paint to express the vibrant emotions I feel when I look. I paint because I love the song of nature.I paint to show the beauty of the world, to encourage us all to look after it. I paint because I strongly believe that art can help to heal the world." She studied drawing and painting with Elizabeth Raymond and won the first prize Beaux Arts de Paris. She now lives and works in East Sussex.

Peter Humphries

His uncanny scenes of life in Paraguayan barrios could illustrate a Graham Greene novel, though we suspect Peter is hinting at his own deep well of stories. Afterwards, luxuriate in the artist's eye for exotic blooms or soothe yourself with a calming landscape.

Gerry Hunt

In recent years I have started each painting with purely formal, open-ended, classical Abstract Expressionist intentions, until some sort of figurative scenario presents itself to me. Whereupon, with as little sacrifice as possible of the pure painting so far achieved, I encourage a believable real scene to emerge. When I drew with charcoal on paper, which is how I first became aware of this possibility in my work, it usually resulted in figures and/or animals, caught in some rather strange and sometimes funny 'in between' situations. Recently, with slowly increasing success, I have begun to achieve this in my paintings. In order to approach the technical simplicity of using just a stick of charcoal, as I do when I draw on paper, while using oil paint on canvas, I have restricted my palette to the three primary colours and white.

Taken from exhibition information "stills from dreams" at the cafe gallery 2003.

Georgia Hurst

Georgia Hurst specialises in Acrylic paint on board and canvas. The effects of natural and artificial light and the way in which it refracts, shatters, and splinters, on a variety of natural surfaces inspire her work. "My work is a continuing exploration of the concept of Reflections and all its suggested metaphors - whether from light, in water, or in the way memories fragment even as we try to catch them".

Audrey Hussey

Audrey Hussey is a compositional painter who predominantly works in oils or Acrylic on canvas. Using painting, photography and memory as her source material, she uses a number of techniques to help stimulate her creativity and the process by which she creates her work. Drawing on Eastern philosophy, yoga and meditation, which she finds helps to exercise, develop and focus her aptitude and creative talents, she allows the images to flow from her, "inner self". Wendy Hyde

The space between music and art has always been a fascinating one and for Wendy Hyde it has proved to be an inspiration. Her work dedicated to the music of J.S Bach contains rhythms and pulses as well as the same harmonious flow of ideas and feelings. The purples bulge and ripple organically into the deep crimsons, creating a feeling of movement and balance. In other works flashes of white provide a lightning bolt of light which serves to illuminate the whole piece. Colours are suddenly given edges and the mindís eye works to turn these into forms. Like all great art, the viewer could see something new each time they looked at this. When the palette changes and she uses dark blues and yellows, the work evokes the power and mystery of the coming tide. Deeply influenced by the abstract expressionists of the past, Hyde uses these influences to create works that show her personal response to the natural world. Powerful and brooding, these paintings would grace any space and provide years of interest.

Yunus Ibraimov

Yunus Ibraimov exhibits here extremely proficient charcoal drawings from the nude and examples of contrasting approaches to using oils on canvas. "Afternoon" and "Sunny Day" demonstrate a deft facility in the handling of paint with a freshness of stroke and colour that at the same time cleverly represent light and shade. The unexpected accents of lilac and mauve are very appealing. Alternatively, in "Poplars" and "Poplars, Sunset", he reveals a very different mood and method of paint application. The horizontal marks conjure up a bleak, blustery snowscape where the landscape shimmers and appears to melt into an insubstantial haze.
