Sally McKay

In order to obtain a level of fluidity and elegance of form and movement, Sally Mckay creates all her drawings and wire sculptures directly from life. Fascinated with contemporary dance Sally spends a sustained amount of time at rehearsals, drawing and sketching the performers as they move, closely observing how movement and dance affects their bodies through their expression of narrative. Sally McKay creates both sculpture and painting that reflects a balance of both. In spring 2004 Sally is working closely with the award winning choreographer, Lea Anderson.

Jasmine Maddock

There is no artist like Jasmine, a one off with a wild and unique imagination able to conjure up visions of surreal beauty and humour from victorian men with duck feet to half men half women with worms as pinstripes on the jacket, to leopard beehive wearing toy cats with leopard rain and self portraits crossed with old time film stars like hedy lamarr who i am said to look like with mini versions coming out of their heads to indicate that Beautiful women are astute and have plenty going on in the brain department:) i work in acrylic, pen, ink, make up and mixed media, and not really inspired by anyone apart from my own imagination but do love rene magritte. I cant really explain how i get there i just do. Its probably a lot to do with feeling and looking out of time, and my fairyness and non connection with society and people.

Bronwen Malcolm

Bronwen Malcolm is a talented draughtswoman with an eye for the grotesque. Conversant across a variety of traditional media formats, the works she shows here utilise pencil on paper, watercolour and oil on canvas and board. Reminiscent of Max Beckmann, George Grosz and Paula Rego, her work is at times darkly satirical, at others comic and colourful. A masked, nude woman waltzes with a ram in a way which is not predictably sexual but instead she wears a resigned expression on her face as if this is quite usual. A tea party of monochromatic collaged figures include participants made up of Hitler and a transexual Punk being fed by a squatting active baby on the tabletop. Not for the faint-hearted, these are confident works which will keep you looking and imagining for a long time afterwards.

Anna Malinowska

A combination of figurative elements, repetitive pattern and form, and an ethereal use of colour, help to create multi layered and highly complex works of Art. Beautiful and haunting, Anna Malinowska's surreally narrative work slowly sinks into the psyche, inviting feelings of passion, contemplation and alluring isolation. Each revisit triggers something new inside us, something missed or unthought-of, a new perspective on the piece. "I really want to pull the viewer discreetly 'into the painting', into it's dimentions so they have a chance to get in touch with it as a whole, get to know another aspect of reality".

HELEN MCCARTHY

Painting and drawing from the model and still life is clearly a productive source for artist Helen McCarthy, Whilst her life drawings are structurally accurate and lyrical, her paintings from life have an expressive quality that resides in the blended, indistinct quality of her paint application. She favours saturated hues and her understated tonal palette further enhances the dreamlike effect. Her recent abstracted drawings in charcoal and pastel are clearly drawn from the memory of observation but seem to seek to distil the presence of human energy and life force.

Helen McKenna-Menges

Helen McKenna-Menges was brought up on the Solway Firth and spent much of her time on the coast in Scotland and England. The power of the lakes and seascapes of the west coast and the dramatic Scottish hills still influences her work today. "Painting became a way of gaining access to the same feelings I had there, when I couldn't be there physically… I love the outdoors and I love the challenge of painting outdoors and the race between the clouds, sun, midges and my paint drying". Helen's recent landscapes paintings focus on the landscape of Scotland, Cumbria, and Cornwall. Helen McKenna-Menges studied at the highly acclaimed Goldsmiths College, London University in 1991.
