The Male Mystique  -  Thumbnails preview

"Let me tell you something. a man ain't a goddamn ax. chopping, hacking, busting every goddamn minute of the day. Things get to him. Things he can't chop down because they're inside." - Toni Morrison, Beloved.

Can the sensitivity of men be suggested by the rippling muscles of the traditional male nude? Ben Law's work shows that although athletic bodies might be hard, the anticipation of touch they provoke renders them sensitive to our gaze.

The beauty, humour and imagination of men is pictured here in Cornelia Brand's open, colourful portraits, Marco Ronga's 'interactive' portraits, and Patrick Piecuch's imagery of male obsession. Whilst masculinity is an especially fertile ground for exploration in Caroline Quan's digital morphing of masculine and plant-like forms.
