Mr Ulrich Osterloh

Ulrich was born in Germany in 1969 and has been living in London since 1988, with various work and study phases spent in Berlin and other parts of Germany, as well as in France and Italy. He recently moved back to Germany and is currently dividing his time between the two countries.

From 1988 until 1991, he studied Fine Art at the University of London, Goldsmiths' College under John Wood, Elma Thubron and Ferris Newton. Since then, his work has been exhibited at galleries in London, Germany and the United States where he had his first exposure in December 1999 at the LA Artists Gallery in Studio City, California.

From September 2000 until January 2001, he showed work at DFN Gallery, New York.
In June and July, 2001 he had a successful solo show at the Ice House in Holland Park, Kensington.
Other shows include Café Gallery Projects in London, the Galerie Espace City Garden in Paris, and Artesian in Edinburgh (2002/03).

A large, two months show of his work was held in 2002 at HPS, Herford, Germany.
Upcoming group and solo shows in London, New York and Amsterdam.

He received an award and inclusion in ‘The Healing Power of Art’, an exhibition organized by Manhattan Arts International, and was a winner in the ‘Chelsea Global Showcase 2003’ at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery, New York.

Ulrich’s work has been featured in several quality online art and literary magazines, and was also used as the logo for the International Conference for Systemic Therapy in London, 2003.

He is currently working with Naxos, the classical music label who use his work on various covers of their CDs, namely the new Schoenberg series and other modern and postmodern composers.

Artist’s statement:

"My aim is to create artworks which are beautiful and challenging, testing the viewer’s ability to embrace what at first seems to be strange and unusual. With every piece I make, I am trying to push my own limits and allow for new possibilities in unexplored places of my mind, and the uncovering of these hidden possibilities is probably the main impetus for my work.

Painting is an entirely magical (equally rational and irrational) process for me that really seems to 'begin with the end, and end with the beginning'. I never cease to be amazed at the creative process, how everything seems to fall into place in the end, even if the struggle can be tremendous.

I see my work as a process of liberation from old and obsolete concepts of ‘reality’. I am looking to art which explores and projects a deeper understanding of being at home in the universe where, ultimately, everything visible and invisible is connected."
