Joseph Laffan (statement)

Following a Foundation Course in Art and Design at Middlesex University, Joseph graduated with a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine art at Loughborough College of Art and an MA in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in 1999. He has exhibited his work since 1993. He also contributed to the Young Printmakers exhibition at the Mercury Gallery, 1997, and won the Chelsea Arts Club Award with Arts Accord, 1998. He has shown his work throughout the UK and was awarded, ‘The Gwen May Award’ in the National Print Exhibition in January 2000.

Joseph’s work looks at the body from a classical viewpoint. It depicts the traditional body form, but in a damaged state, and thereby challenges our perceptions of beauty. His work blurs the traditional boundaries between painting and photography. He uses mixed media printing techniques as diverse as inkjet to lithographic printing. This is to ensure that the prints contain variations in surface and colour creating different depths in the various pieces.

Joseph’s recent work focuses on the tradition of angels in our culture tracing its roots to make his own modern interpretation of the phenomena that is seen in almost every religious tradition.
