Artist’s Statement: My inspiration comes from diverse sources: fabrics jazz music; ceramic tiles, and paintings by Matisse and Klee. The colours of South Africa, where I grew up, and the Bauhaus principled, Rietveld Academy, in Amsterdam, where I studied. I have been inspired by African art both directly and through the filter of European sensibility.
African art and fabrics, also inspired many of my favourite early twentieth century artists – such as Klee and Brancusi.
Growing up in South Africa, African art attracts me: its honesty, energy and improvisation in patterning. I am interested in exploring the power of colour and pattern. The intense colours that I use are woven together to create moods and atmospheres that relate to my experiences of Africa, Europe and the United Kingdom. I have been using the theme of the ‘Weave’ for a number of years, as a symbol of order and chance, harmony and integration.
My paintings on canvas and prints on paper are abstract but refer to landscapes and cityscapes. Through abstraction, I aspire towards the infinite rather than the specific. The works on canvas combine printing and painting. These mixed media canvases are abstract, contemplative, colour fields. The works on paper are serigraph, (silk-screen) mono-prints, using concentrated colours that blend into each other. I print onto canvas and acid free Fabriano (Italian) or Moulin du Gue (French) papers.
Advanced Graphics London has printed a limited edition pair of serigraphs on Fabriano Paper (100 of each) entitled ‘Delphi – Day’ and ‘Delphi – Night’.
